Reviewing Labs Not for ESRD on Mobile

Have more questions? Submit a request

Labs that are not for the treatment of ESRD must have appropriate medical necessity documentation. For clinical labs, appropriate medical necessity documentation includes:

  • The clinical justification from the physician for the lab order;
  • A signed order by the physician;
  • An indication that the physician reviewed the lab result; and
  • Documentation by the physician regarding how the lab result was used in the treatment of the patient’s condition.

Reviewing in OneView

To enhance medical necessity documentation related to the review and use of results with minimal workflow disruption, a queue to manage Labs Not for the Treatment of ESRD is available in OneView.

This feature gives physicians the opportunity to indicate they have reviewed labs that were ordered Not for the Treatment of ESRD. Physicians may select either “Reviewed, No Change [in Care Plan]” or “Reviewed, Changed Care Plan” to the Lab results that are presented in the queue.

Please note

Any changes to the care plan must be directly communicated to the DaVita Care Team.

Comments

In addition, a comment box is offered to give physicians the ability to document how labs ordered Not for the Treatment of ESRD were used in the treatment of the patient’s condition. For example, if a physician were to order an A1c for the treatment of diabetes, this free-text field would allow for the physician to document how the lab result was used in the treatment of the patient’s diabetes.

This feature will be displayed as a task card labeled “Labs Not for ESRD Treatment” on the OneView home page and “Non-ESRD Labs” on the OneView Mobile home page.

The following criteria should be kept in mind:

  • The designation of whether a lab is for the treatment of ESRD or not is determined by the physician and should be documented in the medical record.
  • If marked as Not for the Treatment of ESRD, each instance of that lab, even if part of a protocol or ordered as a series, will require this documentation.

Steps to Document Review of Non-ESRD Labs

  1. From the OneView Mobile home page, tap the “ Non-ESRD Labs” task card
  1. Tap the applicable patient
  1. Tap either “ Reviewed, Changed Care Plan” or “Reviewed No Change

TIP: If you select “Reviewed, Changed Care Plan” a comment box will automatically open.  Please note that any changes to the care plan must be directly communicated to the DaVita Care Team.

NOTE: A lab result is considered past due if it has not been reviewed within 30 days of the resulted date.

  1. When you are finished documenting, tap “ Sign and Submit” to submit your information to DaVita labs
Please note

The total number of lab results that require documentation will decrease by those acted upon. If the documentation is completed in OneView or OneView Mobile, the lab result will not be presented again for documentation in OneView and vice versa.
