Create Prescription
Providers can create e-prescriptions to send to an outside pharmacy for non-treatment medications by selecting the View Medications button in ESRD/AKI Mgmt tab or by clicking the "+Add RX" button under Clinical Summary tab. For full details, please see the “ePrescribe” article.
NOTE: The ePrescribe process has two steps. After the prescription is created, then the prescription has to be reviewed, signed, and an action selected for the prescription to be complete. For full details on how to complete the prescription, please see the “Complete Prescription” article.
To add a prescription in ESRD/AKI Mgmt:
Step 1: Click the View MEDICATIONS button
Step 2: Click +ADD RX
Step 3: Enter the medication name into the Search field
NOTE: The patient’s allergies will display at the top. Patient Has NKA will display for patients that have no known allergies. There is not an automated interaction check with allergies and medications when prescribing.
Step 4: Select the appropriate medication from the list
Step 5: Select the appropriate strength to prescribe
NOTE: Some medications will not offer multiple strengths. If there are not multiple strengths available for the selected medication, it will go directly to the prescriptions screen with the medication you selected.
Step 6: Document the details of the prescription
NOTE: Fields with an asterisk are required. The Pharmacy field will default to the most recently pharmacy used by that patient but can be modified by clicking in the field for pharmacy management options. The search icon can also be used to find a different pharmacy. More information on the Pharmacy field can be found here.

Step 7: Click SAVE
NOTE: SAVE & NEW will save the current prescription and then open the Add RX screen to allow you to complete another prescription.

To save SIGs to the Favorite List:
Step 1: Click the Clinical Summary tab
ALTERNATE OPTION: Click the ESRD/AKI Mgmt tab > Medications button
Step 2: Click +ADD RX
Step 3: Enter the medication name into the Search field
Step 4: Select the appropriate strength to prescribe
Step 5: Document the details of the prescription
Step 6: Click the “Save SIG to favorites” checkbox
Step 7: Click SAVE
Once saved, the SIG is available in the “My Favorite Saved SIGs” list and can be selected by clicking the radio button next to the appropriate SIG. The most recently saved SIG will appear at the top of the list. The SIG can be removed from the list by clicking on the “X” located on the far right of the SIG.
To add a prescription in Rcopia:
Step 1: Click the Clinical Summary tab
Step 2: Click SIGN & SEND
ALTERNATE OPTION: Click the RCOPIA button if there are no pending prescriptions.
Step 3: Click the Create New Rx button within the context bar at the top of the Prescription Report page
Step 4: Enter the medication name into the Search field
NOTE: A dropdown menu appears with auto-populated results. You can also run a full search by clicking the magnifying glass icon next to the search field.
Step 5: Select the appropriate medication from the list
Step 6: Select the proper strength to prescribe
NOTE: You may receive alerts when creating prescriptions for your patients. These alerts inform you of an unusual or potentially dangerous outcome of an action you are about to perform. For more details about the Rcopia alerts, click ePrescribe Rcopia Alerts.
Step 7:Document the details of the prescription
NOTE: Fields with an asterisk and orange background are required. The Pharmacy field will default to the most recently used pharmacy by that patient but can be modified by clicking in the field for pharmacy management options.
Step 8: Click Review
Step 9: Click Save Pending Rx after reviewing the order for accuracy
When processing the prescription orders, the possible actions displayed are detailed below:
Action | Description |
Save Pending Rx | Adds the prescription to the Prescription Management section on the Patient Summary for it to be reviewed and signed. |
Save and Add Rx | Saves the current prescription and allows you to add another prescription. |
Back | Allows you to edit your prescription details. |
Cancel | Cancels the prescription. |

To add a prescription from your favorites list in Rcopia:
Step 1:Click the Clinical Summary tab
Step 2: Click Pending RX Must be sent NEW SIGN & SEND

Step 3: Click the Star icon
Step 4: Select the appropriate medication from the favorites list
NOTE: The Favorites view displays the Org Favorites, My Favorites, and Recent prescriptions that have been sent in the practice. The Practice Favorites and Location Favorites show in the Org Favorites section.
Step 5: Document the details of the prescription
